Like most people in my field, I started developing for the web by accident. As a child I always thought I was destined to become a computer technician, doomed to spend most of my adult years in an old dusty garage repairing hardware and chugging coke. A little more than 7 years later Im designing websites for companies; breathing and loving it. I’d have passed on a pleasant conversation over dinner with Keira Knightley to download fonts and brushes. I was obsessed.
Today I find myself whistling a slightly different tune; same genre, different song. Designing, coding and developing websites for other companies no longer fits my career description. When your as tangled up in the web as I am your in a club with billions of enthusiast just like you. You read their blogs, scout their work, hell… you even eat their brand of toast because they twitter’d it. The only true difference between them and yourself is they contribute and play a more relevant role in the development of the web. To me, designing websites for others isn’t as rewarding when you use services like Facebook and Google. I want to set sail to construct my own significant contribution to the web and develop a web-based service that offers convenience, ease of use, a beautiful design and mind-blowing functionality. Only then will I be satisfied creatively and motivated passionately to continue my career and confidently title myself Web Developer and Programmer.
So, with that, I’ve began working on a few projects that I am already very proud of. I will for sure post those future ideas when they become much more mature.
Man, I’ve heard so much about this website that I just had to try it out for myself. All of my favorite internet celebrities use it to micro-blog about what their up to. If you’ve ever wanted a blog but weren’t sure where to get started, here is a great warm up site to help you out.
Tumblr.com makes it easy to set up a blog of your very own. There are literally 3 steps to get started and once its up, its up. It cost absolutely nothing to get started and its very simple to navigate. Once registered they give you a “name.tumblr.com” URL, but they also give you the option to set up a personal URL, if you know what your doing of course.
The site is great. Though it differs so much from what I use on here which is Wordpress, it does it’s job for what its for, which is to provide a simple and effective tool to get whatever randomness that may be on your mind out there. Video, Audio, Text, Images, Links, you name it. You could do it.
Check it out at TUMBLR.com or check out mine which probably wont be updated as much until a few weeks from now - ImSoCool.Tumblr.com.
Lets talk a bit about instant messaging. Its come a long way, wouldn’t you agree? If your between the ages of 15 and 25, chances are your logged into your favorite messenger client pretty much through your whole day. Even right now as your reading!
I think its safe to say the majority of my friends use MSN Live Messenger for the Windows Platform. Great Instant Messenger by the way. Oh, and then you’ve got those cool plugins that you could install that include all those cool viruses that you don’t even know you have yet. I divorced that particular client when I switched over to the Mac.
Many new Mac switchers find a hard time finding ‘MSN Messenger for Mac‘ (which is actually made by Microsoft, not Apple) or something similar that incorporates all the same and/or better features than it’s Windows cousin. The problem is, Microsoft has never been really good at implementing their IM client on the Macintosh from the jump so people are forced to search for alternatives instead.
Thats where Adium comes in! Adium is an open source Instant Messenger application for a number of various chat protocols. What the heck does that mean? Well, basically it takes your MSN, Yahoo, iChat, Google Chat, AOL , ICQ and others and allows you to talk to all of your buddies on one combined list. Totally eliminating the need to open 4 or 5 different applications at one time. The great thing about it is its 100% customizable. So you could dress it however you like.
If your on a Mac, take a look at this great app here. We’ll just have to wait and see what Microsoft is cooking up as the next version to MSN for Mac.
Oh, did I mention, the icon is a little green dock! Cool huh?
If you’ve spent more than ten minutes around me you’d know I love to laugh. My humor is dry and for the most part sarcastic. I laugh at my own jokes even when others have difficulty understanding the punch lines, its funny because sometimes them “not understanding the punch line”… is the punch line!
I spend a unhealthy amount of time browsing collegehumor.com for worthy laughs and cheap giggles. The original college humor videos made by the actual staff members are some of the funniest short clips I’ve ever seen on the internet. It also features pictures, articles and a section called “girls“? The website was first launched in 1999 as a way for two high-school friends to keep in touch. Since then its popularity has grown, maxing over 18 million unique visitors a month.
If you love dry humor, college pranks, impersonations and random laughs take my word for it, collegehumor.com is the place to find it.
Since it’s start the internet has been evolving rapidly at an uncontrollable rate. Just about anyone could publish a website these days and just about anyone could view them. Im not surprised of some of the things I come across on a regular. Who knew someday we’d live in a world where you could hire someone online, to come and spit on you for a reasonable price? No really. Google it.
A few months ago a friend put me on to a very different but ‘interesting’ website. PostSecret.com. Not sure of the purpose, I quickly skimmed through the website trying to make sense of it. For the first 4 minutes it appeared to be something an obsessive-crazed journalist put together in his basement. The site was full of secrets. Secrets about sex, about lies about love ones. Secrets about rape, murder, then love and happiness. Then, after about 5 minutes in I realized these weren’t the secrets of one man. They were secrets of random everyday people? I thought to myself. What a great idea.
People send in home-made post cards to an address provided on PostSecret.com and everyday people send in their deepest secrets. Some secrets are touching, others ore sad, but most are compelling. Every Sunday, about 20 new secrets are posted for the world to read.
They’ve even published 3 books full of secrets. I myself purchased one and I have to say, its an interesting read. They are available on Amazon.com.
Caution: Some of the content on PostSecret.com are of graphic nature. I strongly suggest you do not visit the website if you are uncomfortable with it.
How are ya? My name is Jesse. I blog about all sorts of things I find interesting on the web and in my life. If your lucky you might find some hobby-photography on here also. Enjoy.
