Working for C Travel

I was thinking as I was riding home in the taxi tonight and I suddently realized I’ve always had the passion to run my own business. I could remember times when I was younger pretending like I was doing just that. Running a business. These days I could think of things differently and not think of it as failure or weakness.

Most people get into business because they want to have complete control. The independence is what I felt empowered me. To wake up in my PJs and hope into my computer chair with a bowl of lucky charms and bad breath. Fortunately my experience was in a field that required very little communication skills and/or physical meetings.

But I feel at home designing for print and web. Even if it is working for a company. Its not so much where I work that makes me happy. Its what I do that is most important to me. When I joined the C Travel marketing team I prayed about having the sort of job that allows me to be creative and have a dominant amount of creative control. There aren’t much jobs like that. Im so happy mine is an exception.

I signed a contract for your average 9am-5pm work day. But since my first day I’ve been finding myself strolling in the office at 6am and leaving at 7:30ish. I can’t get enough. I love design. I love my job.

We’ve All heard the same boring quote. I heard it in school and remember saying to myself, “what a dufus” as I ignored the motivational speaker guest who’d came to talk to us that day. He/They say, “If your work is what you love, you’ll never -work- a day in your life!”.

Now I know what he means…

Self warming toilets

Its that time of the year again. Winter! There’s so much to look forward to: Dressing in layers, cuddling around the fire with a loved one, rolling around in the icy snow. Okay, maybe not the last one; it doesn’t snow in Bermuda. But the thought is nice. Isn’t it?

Since the invention of the toilet we’ve come up with all sorts of great and wonderful ways of using it. Who’d have thought we could “go” right from the comfort of our own homes. The indoor bathroom has indeed revolutionized the way we use the bucket.

But what about during the cold seasons? Have you ever looked forward to sitting on the dumper with your favorite x-men comic during a cold night? No? Just me? Okay. Still, don’t you detest the cold toilet seat on your rump? You shouldn’t have to turn on your bathroom heater every time you use it. You’d think after all these years someone would have invented and patented a toilet that sensors your hinee and warms the seat as you sit! So frustrating wouldn’t you agree?

Recurring laptop bag nightmares

In about 20 years from now I see myself sitting around an old friend’s coffee table discussing our favorite cartoons from the 90s while enjoying a glass of red wine and snacking on ritz crackers. I’d mention how ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ was ahead of its time and the person sitting across from me would mention their suspicions that “The Ren and Stimpy” show was a conspiracy to help kids grow to be serial killers. We’d all sit back and laugh, then someone would say “Hey! Remember when Damond could walk normal? Back when he didn’t have a hunch back? Ha. Those we’re the days eh?”.

Thats my recurring nightmare and I owe it all to my bulky laptop bag. Its a messenger styled bag that hangs over one shoulder - a man purse if you will. Because I walk so darn much, it tends to really bother my right shoulder when I walk.

I was visiting (or stalking) another fellow graphic designer’s website and noticed he had blog posts about how much he loved it. It wasn’t at all like a laptop bag. It had an army print and the fabric looked so soft and comfortable. Even the strap.

Unfortunately there aren’t any stores here that I know of selling anything close. Im bummed. Guess I’ll have to wait till I travel again. I just hope by then my current bag doesn’t screw up my shoulder and cause me to be the laugh of the night someday.

The comfy bunkie

My bedroom or what I most commonly know it as, my layer, isn’t bad at all. There’s a place for my MacBook, plenty of lamps and a window thats deprived of light (I love the darkness). But why the fruity-nut-cakes is it so frigging hot sometimes? Arg.

My room is right next to the houses’ water tank and actually about 50% underground, giving it an exciting batman cave experience. But thats about it. Its pretty neutral as far as colors are concerned and the walls could need a bit of dressing up. You there! Quit snickering! I like it this way.

I moved in this room about a year ago. It was priority one on the old apartment located at the bottom of the family house. The plan was laid out on a series of colorful sticky notes months before I started to fix it up. There was no floor, closet, and at one point, no wall. After I fixed those, I added a ceiling light, bedroom door, closet doors, blinds and moved in.

Time for phase two. December is here and I think its time for a overhaul. Any ideas? Im so excited. Aren’t you?

Motion Designer Eden Soto

December is almost here and Im gearing up for a new project Im due to start. Since this projects required that I dig into my past career of television broadcast, I’ve been searching online for a motion designer.

I watch tons of ‘podcast’ and I’ve noticed really cool intros to some of the shows. Turns out the guy who makes most of them also does stuff for Coke and even Sony! Yea, I know! Big boy huh? Its just one guy too. No company. The freelance life is the best. Anywho, if you have a chance, check out some of his motion graphic work. Im sure he charges a very pretty penny too.

A few favorite wallpapers

If your anything like me, you love change. I change my desktop image at least once a week so I’m constantly looking for new ones. One of my favorite places to browse for new wallpapers is InterfaceLift.com. They also have cool icons for your folders and files and great themes (if your a mac user). Check them out sometime.

Here are a few of my favorites:
